Photo Analysis

This is a photo of Luci Johnson, the daughter of President Lyndon Johnson. This photo appeared on the magazine, Life International on June 1, 1964.

To me, the photo above makes me feel quite calm because even thought the person in the photo is an important person, she doesn't look very scary or intimidating. I think that she looks like a serious yet fun person. Her clothing makes her look mature and color of her dress (light blue) tells me that she is a fun and bright person. If she wore a grey dress instead of a light blue dress, I think that she would look like a very serious, slightly scary woman. I think that her pearl necklace and gold bracelet make her look sophisticated and quite rich. I don't think that the background matter's much in this particular photograph, but I noticed that she appears to be outside, but the lighting seems to be unnatural. The shadows on her face are rather light.

The 3 Variables of Photography
The 3 variables of photography are Lighting, Camera Angle, and Proximity. These variables can be organized differently to make the viewer feel a certain way. Photos can make you feel happy, sad, annoyed, nostalgic, inspired, curious, etc. This all depends on how the photo was taken. There are other things that can help you decide about how you feel about a photograph, such as:

The Background: Where was this photo taken?


Wardrobe: What is the person in the photo wearing?


Props: Are they holding anything? Do they have any accessories on them?

Rice Krispies: Snap, Crackle & Pop

This advertisement mentions that the Kellogg's brand is promoting their cereal, Rice Krispies. The people who organized this advertisement used 3 persuasion techniques; Humor, Friends, and Cartoon. This ad uses the Cartoon techniques by including Snap, Crackle & Pop, the cartoon mascots of Kellogg's Rice Krispies. This ad used Humor because one of the little girls eating the cereal called Crackle a "She", causing Crackle to worry about what makes him seem like a girl and Snap and Pop teasing him about it. The Friends technique is also used in this ad because a bunch of kids are sitting together, eating cereal, smiling and talking about what they like about the cereal. I believe that the Cartoon technique is the most dominant because when you watch the commercial, Snap, Crackle and Pop stand out the most. I think that this advertisement is pretty effective in persuasion because when the commercial mentioned that "with Snap, Crackle, and Pop, Rice Krispies cereal has the taste that tickles." the proof is when the kids said "Hear that?" "It's Snap and Pop!" "And Crackle. She's cute!" there was a crackling sound coming from the cereal. I think that this cereal commercial would be quite effective with kids. This commercial would be quite effective in persuading kids to ask their parents to buy Kellogg's Rice Krispies cereal.

Persuasion

Persuasion means to try and get someone to do something, think a certain way, buy a certain item, etc.

On November 24, 2011 we had a discussion about Persuasion in Advertising. We talked about the 10 different techniques that are used in advertisements. Humor, Macho, Friends, Family, Fun, Nature, Sexy, Cartoon, Celebrity, and Wealth. We also play a game. We paired up and each person got an envelope with 10 strips of paper. Each piece of paper had one technique written on it. We were to take a single strip of paper from our envelope and find an advertisement (or picture) that used the technique written on the piece of paper. After we have found the advertisement that used the technique on the paper, our partners then had to guess which technique was written on the strip of paper. If our partners got the answer right, we put the strip of paper on the table and if they were wrong, we had to put the paper back into the envelope. The first pair to finish emptying both their envelopes win.

The 10 Techniques


Humor - an image or video that makes the people viewing it, laugh.



Macho - Usually men who are strong, tough-looking, and powerful. They might be from the army, cowboys, etc.


Friends -  A group of people having fun, playing games, or hanging out.


Family - Parents playing a board game with their children, eating healthy foods with their family.


Fun - Water Parks, people smiling and laughing, etc


Nature - Forests, flowers, waterfalls, etc


Sexy - Usually females wearing revealing clothing such as bikinis, lingerie.


Cartoon - Using animations instead of real people to attract people's attention.


Celebrity - Famous people such as Drew Barrymore, Eminem, etc.


Wealth - expensive clothing, vehicles, homes, etc.

Foster Parents

Foster parents help children, who might be alone, survive in our world. All children have the right to live with a family who will love and care for them. Foster parents take care of children who can't live with their biological parents. Foster children live with families who are willing to treat the child(children) as if they were their own. Any adult can become a foster parent. What's important is the fact that you and your family are willing to think of the foster child(children) as family. it doesn't matter if you are From an ethnic, racial or cultural background. You just have to be able to take care of the children and be able to give them the attention and love that they deserve. Foster parents must be able to tolerate the children who might not want to be part of their family and they must have “the patience to work with a child who may be withdrawn or hyperactive.”(C&F Services). Foster parents receive a daily allowance to assist them in purchasing food and clothing for the child. This amount is paid monthly and is based on the need and age of the child.(Anishinaabe) The ages of foster children range from the day they were born to their 17th year. The amount of time a foster child(or children) stays with a foster family ranges from a few hours to years. Foster families must be prepared to give the children the attention and love that they may need, but they must also be prepared to "let go" when the time for the children to leave comes. “The word "foster" means to help someone (or something) grow and develop. It also means to take care of someone's needs.” (KidsHealth) Everyone deserves a home. A house to go home to, parents that love and care for them, but not all kids have that privilege. Some kids get abused by their parents and that's when the government decides to take that child who is being abused or improperly cared for, and place them in a foster home. "Foster carers help children and young people feel valued, respected and listened to as individuals." (Tasmania) Foster Parents have many responsibilities. Such as:

• Meet the child's basic need for food, clothing and shelter.
• Provide fair and equal treatment for all children in your home.
• Enroll the child in school.
• Encourages the child's involvement in social and recreational activities.
• Provide consistent and realistic discipline and guidance that is age appropriate and does not involve corporal punishment.
• Transport child to activities, meetings, appointments, etc. (FCAC)

Foster parents help children who cannot be with their true parents, they help children feel safe, love, and cared for.

Cruel or Kind? Is (S)He Telling The Truth?

“But I'll never know which one, how am I going to tell the difference between someone who is cruel and someone who is kind.” Heba: A Small Statistic

Anyone can be cruel or kind. I think that everyone has both kindness and cruelty in our hearts. It doesn't matter if a person looks or acts like a "kind person" or a "cruel person" because everyone can act like they have a personality that is completely opposite from their true personality. Deep within the heart of a kind person, they can be cruel. They can be wishing that the person in front of them would never appear again, but on the outside, they are best friends. The only person who knows your true personality is you. And the only person who knows your best friend's true personality is your best friend, because even though they tell you “You're the only one who knows my real personality.”, it doesn't mean that they aren't lying. You can think that your friend is shy and weak, but maybe, while someone is bullying her, she's thinking “Does this girl even hear herself? I would love to slap her right now.”. We never know who is cruel or kind.
